Is our Libido in danger? Global “husky” figure trends, hand in hand with inferiority complex served by fashion and media, among women (and rarely among men) cause severe self image frustration and get it off, instead of on.
“Pretty people” in show business, and generally served by media, kill the sex life of regular people. Editors and producers are well aware of the fact that showing especially proportional and ideally figured bodies meets the eye more than showing regular ones or even ones “below the scale”. Women seem to be more sensitive to the comparison of looks with gorgeous protagonists on screens and magazine pages.
Media and fashion industries’ exposure to bodily perfectionism strongly affects women’s sex life. A recent British study showed that more than half of the women included in the study feel too fat or overweight for their partner’s preference. “Sex in the nation” study showed that 29% of women avoid having sex as they feel “simply too fat”, and following 23% finds their “flabby body parts” no.1 culprit for sexual abstinence.
After this 52% of women struggle with the feeling of being fat and/or flabby, following 33% describe themselves as unattractive for some other, physically non-related ground.
Studies showed that 13% of women involve themselves only in sex with lights off because they worry their partners won’t like what they see. 10% would like to try new things, but they don’t go further from imagination as they fear their body imperfections would overtake the big picture. So the trend of “husky” figures due to unhealthy diet and insufficient physical activity joined forces with the inferiority complex, imposed by the media and fashion industry.
OTHER LUST & LIBIDO KILLERS
As a result of the above-mentioned trends that cause growing frustration related to self-image, women today find it hard to handle intimate contacts, even “innocent” nudity, for example when going to the beach or in the summer. This affects men too, but on a much smaller scale. They tend to be less sensitive when it’s up to their physical appearance, or they simply care less about how their partners see them. So (only) 8% of them declared avoiding having sex due to the overweighting, and a further 11% abstain from having sex because of the flabby zones of the body.
Negative perspective regarding the self-image isn’t the only reason for the decrease of sexual activity, so media and fashion requests aren’t to take all the blame. Low libido among both men and women sometimes tends to be the consequence of illness, especially ones that impose physical limitations or require special kind of care. That kind of illness causes stress, and a state of stress, regardless of the cause, among most people, is incompatible with feelings of lust.
Anxiety and depression also affect libido, as many prescriptions as side effects have decreased libido.
Among some women, the same effect is considered to be the consequence of oral contraception, as they affect hormonal balance.
The good news is, decreased libido normalizes after discontinuation of oral contraceptives. Sometimes, during breastfeeding, libido decreases due to the presence of Prolactin, a hormone that promotes breastfeeding. Vital importance for balanced libido in men and women has the masculine hormone testosterone, also produced in women but in much smaller amounts.
Studies have shown that low levels of free-range testosterone affect libido. So apart from having normal, or even increased levels of total testosterone in the blood, free-range testosterone is as important, as it can bind to the receptors in the organism that are directly related to sex.
Classic remedies for highly sensitive persons to deal with low libido, low sexual affinity, or excessive shyness are commonly alcohol and drugs. Alcohol molecules temporarily numb stress reactions, fear, and other limitations that stand in the way of sexual intercourse. Cocaine or Amphetamines stimulate the central nervous system and by that, they briefly increase total body energy and libido.
EXERCISE CONTRIBUTES LIBIDO
Alcohol and drugs, due to the bad effect on the body and dangerous effect they have on a person’s behavior, don’t tend to be proper “therapy” to treat low libido and excessive shyness. It is much preferable to use natural remedies such as ginseng, guarana, and royal jelly, that are proven to increase libido, sexual arousal, willpower, and generally contribute to wellbeing. Besides, it is also advisable to work out regularly.
Regular physical activity affects a few key aspects of health that impact sexuality. Exercise stimulates testosterone production, directly stimulating libido: it activates a wide palette of pleasure hormones, positively affecting mood, meanwhile decreasing stress and tension levels, in addition to positive effects on body weight and muscle tone, improved the notion of one’s appearance and – surprisingly – improves the real attraction of the person itself.
After a hard workout tries to relax through yoga or autogenic training, which additionally helps to decrease stress levels and automatically enable redirection of energy from stress defense to sexual activity.
Pickiness or taste that is impossible to indulge?
Strangely, some of the usual causes of refraining from sex never appear in the surveys! For example, some people refrain from sex with their long life partners or spouses as they don’t find them attractive anymore, or they never even did, but they entered the relationship die to economical reasons or family pressure.
Equally, the cause of rare sexual activity can be low sexual affinity, as the latter is directly related to low-stress tolerance. Persons with low sex affinity, frail to stress, have refined taste when it comes to sexual partners, so not many people meet and fit these criteria. The more sensitive a person is, the more demanding it will be, so it will be especially frail to any esthetical imperfections in real or potential partners, as phoney as they are. And only a few can meet esthetical demands like that.
