Even though the world is in turmoil due to pandemic, one of most important things somehow went under the radar – make your immune system stronger. After all, that’s your first line of defense against anything, including Covid19 virus. So we made a list of common but very strong food that can help your immune system.

Garlic

Probably everyone heard that garlic alone or in some combination is a great natural cure for cold and flu. It doesn’t really need to be attached with some magical properties, but it is true that it gives the human body a lot of good. Except for allicin, main component for the antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial properties, garlic also has few more compounds of similar properties and they all in synergy help boost the immune system.

Allicin is made under the influence of enzyme alliinase when there is some physical damage to garlic, like slicing or crushing. Allicin has sulphur which gives garlic a specific and well known smell and taste. Allicin is also a very unstable element so it quickly changes to different compounds with sulphur that gives garlic its healing abilities – helping in defensive response of some types of white blood cells when they encounter certain viruses, mostly those of common cold and flu.

Garlic is also important in prevention – studies show that it lowers the risk of getting common cold or flu, time of being sick and can ease the symptoms also. In one 3 month study, 146 healthy volunteers were divided into 2 groups. One was getting garlic supplements and other placebo. First group had about 63% lower risk of getting a common cold, and those that did got sick, the common cold lasted 70% shorter.

To get most out of garlic in cooking, it is good to cut the garlic at least 10 minutes before using it, because heat is destroying enzyme alliinase and it’s good to give some time for more of the allicin compound to be made before cooking. Same thing if you eat garlic raw.

To get the most health benefits of garlic you need to eat 2-3 garlic parts a day. If you use supplements, normal dosage is between 600 and 1200 mg per day. More than that and you might get a toxic response instead.

Even though the world is in turmoil due to pandemic, one of most important things somehow went under the radar – make your immune system stronger. After all, that’s your first line of defense against anything, including Covid19 virus. So we made a list of common but very strong food that can help your immune system.

Broccoli

If we could choose just one vegetable, it would be broccoli. It is one of the most nutrient rich vegetables. It has vitamin K, chromium, potassium, magnesium, vitamin B9 and plenty of vitamin C. It also has compounds indole-3-carbinol and sulforaphane that show anti cancerogenic abilities, plus sulforaphane is increasing the ability of the organism to create antioxidantes. Benefits of broccoli starts in the small and big intestine when indigestible fibers come to feed the bacterias in your gut and create short chain fatty acids, it leads to increasing numbers of good bacterias, healthier guts and better immunity.

As a signal of good overall health, good gut health is of most importance since it affects almost every part of our body. Connection of good gut bacterias and healthy mind is a new territory. According to scientists at Harvard University Medical School, disturbed digestion can cause anxiety, depression and stress because the brain and gastrointestinal system are very closely connected. If you have a bad unhealthy diet you can mess up things with the gut brain connection.

To get the best out of Broccoli, don’t fry them or bake them, boil them preferably on the steam, and when it’s young it can be consumed fresh in a salad. The highest concentration of good things from broccoli are broccoli sprouts. You can get fresh broccoli two times in a year, early summer and early fall, but in normal times, it is usually available throughout the whole year, even frozen. As with most vegetables, broccoli can be frozen up to a year and lose just a slight amount of some micronutrients.

Spinach

This plant is often on our plates and that is great, because spinach is a superfood due to high amounts of vitamins, fibers and minerals. Magnesium is essential for normal functioning of all muscles, including the heart. Potassium helps with extracting water and regulates blood pressure, stimulates detox of the organism and makes kidneys and heart to work smoother. Beta carotene is a strong antioxidant, B complex vitamins are very important for your nerves, but also for you skin, hair and nails. Antioxidant lutein is extremely important for the health of your eyes. Fibers in spinach stimulate bowel motility and help in removing waste from the organism and also lowers the possibility of constipation. Spinach is one of the best sources of vitamin K which is important for bone health. Only 100 grams of spinach has almost 4 times of the recommended daily dose.

But spinach also has something called oxalic acid, and its crystals can clog kidney canals, so for people with kidney problems it’s not advised to eat spinach. Oxalic acid can be neutralized to some degree by mixing spinach with milk. Calcium in milk will bond with the oxalic acid and create insoluble compound that can be easily removed from the organism.

You can get best out of spinach if it’s only shortly boiled in water or on steam to keep all the good stuff. Young spinach can also be eaten fresh. Spinach season lasts almost the whole season and it is always available frozen but then it can lose some of the flavor.

Basil (Ocimum basilicum) is a classic mediterranean spice, one of the most favored, most used and most common in mediterranean places. We can for sure say that italian cuisine would not be what it is now without this small bushy plant with its aromatic and sweet leaves. This plant is a cousin to the mint plant, so they share the same look. There are more than 60 different varieties of basil with different looks, smell and taste. Most common is the sweet basil, with its dark green leaves and little pungent taste. There are varieties with purple or red leaves, as some with specific tastes like lemon basil, cinnamon basil or anise basil.

While many know why basil is one of the most favored spices in the kitchen, many don’t know that by using this spice they are also doing good to their body and health. It is widely used in traditional medicine as a whole plant and basil oil. Basil is a great source of vitamin K and manganese, a very good source of copper, vitamin A and vitamin C and also a good source of calcium, iron, magnesium and omega 3 fatty acids.

Against inflammation and oxidative stress

When there is a mention about antioxidants everyone thinks about the berry fruits, but basil with its properties is on the same level as all sorts of berries. Basil has plant flavonoids that can help to protect white blood cells and protect the body against free radicals, and also has anti-inflammatory properties. For that purpose essential basil oil is used. Study which results were published in the publication Nutrition and Cancer found that phytochemicals in basil can in a natural way stop cancerous behaviour in cells. Unique types of flavonoids in basil can help in protecting organisms on a cellular level. The water soluble flavonoids from basil called orientin and vicenin gained most attention from scientists because it showed that they can protect cell structure and also chromosomes from danger that can cause radiation and oxidative stress.

Adaptogenic properties

Compounds in basil showed their strength in boosting the immune system and fighting against infections. Basil extract, researches showed, to help in fighting against resistant bacteria that were not responding to antibiotic therapy. With all that, this spice has adaptogenic properties and what does that mean. Adaptogenic plants increase the resistance of the organism to a wide spectrum of bad conditions from biological, chemical and physical sources, and these plants help to make things in organism go back to normal.

Chlorella is one of the rare edible sweetwater algae. There are more than 30 species of this one cell organism of green color and most researched are Chlorella vulgaris and Chlorella pyrenoidosa. This algae is super food, but because it has a hard cell membrane, people can not digest it in its raw form, so it has to be supplemented in tablets, powder or extract. It is consumed with a water or a juice half an hour before a meal. Daily dosage is 2-3g. There is not an exact number prescribed since there was not enough evidence to specify an proper therapeutic dosage.

Chlorophyll like a blood

Dried Chlorella has around 50% proteins, so it is a great source of amino acids. It contains all 9 essential amino acids, all vitamins from the B family and also vitamins C, E, A and K. Prom minerals iron is the most common and it’s absorption is helped by the vitamin C included. It also contains magnesium, zink, copper, potassium and calcium, and also fibers and omega 3 fatty acids.

It is very good to improve a blood test. It contains chlorophyll, plant pigment, also known as plant blood because its molecule is similar to the molecule of hemoglobin, red pigment in blood. Only difference is that in the core of the hemoglobin molecule there is an atom of iron, while in the molecule of chlorophyll is an atom of magnesium.

Detoxification

From the benefits of Chlorella, most commonly mentioned is the detox of the organism, and some studies show it is effective in removing heavy metals from the body along with other harmful components that the body needs longer time to remove itself. It helps to lower levels of harmful chemicals that sometimes appear in food like dioxins (they are nus product of burning organic matter), that can affect hormone balance and immune system, and also are not easy on the liver functions. There is evidence that proves that Chlorella boosts the natural process of removing toxins from the body.

More good sides of Chlorella

It is considered that Chlorella is improving the immune response, that can neutralize high acidity of organism, improves levels of oxygen in blood, protects arteries from hardening and slightly lower high blood pressure, it has an impact of lowering the sugar levels in blood, affect the inflammations to speed up recovery. Also contains carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin that protects eyes, keeps the liver in good shape, improves better digestion and speeds up the metabolism.

Possible side effects and interactions

Chlorella is considered safe when taken orally up to 25-30 weeks, but in some cases it can cause nausea, diarrhea, gasses, cramps, vomiting and green colored stool. Most of those symptoms last up to two weeks when starting to use it. Since Chlorella affects the immune system, it is possible that with people that have an immune system compromised it causes the proliferation of the “bad” bacteria in the intestines. Chlorella can also cause sensitivity of skin to UV lighting and sometimes cause allergic reaction for people who are already allergic to mold. It is possible to lower the efficiency of the medications that affect the immune system and also since it contains vitamin K, it can lower the efficiency of the anticoagulant drug warfarin. So it is best not to use Chlorella while a person is using anticoagulant therapy.

Skin is our biggest organ, a protective shield from the environment.  It protects us from bad biological, physical and chemical influences from the environment. It prevents evaporation of water from the body, a great thermal insulator and significant part of the body immune system. But years don’t spare anyone and the body gets older and so does get skin with it. On some people it will be visible sooner, mostly very light skin people, while people with thicker more fat consisting skin shows less visual indicators of aging. Even though it’s a process we can’t stop, we can slow it down with proper care.

It’s not all about genes

Skin has few layers but they all age equally, the visible changes are mostly on the parts of the body that are not usually covered like face, back of the head, forearms and shins. You can start showing aging skin sooner than normally and that can be noticed by rougher skin with showing of the deeper wrinkles, less elasticity, more visible capillaries or showing of pigmentation spots on the skin.

Skin becomes dry and wrinkles more visible and the surface loses the shine. The look of the older face also can be due to losing volume of the skeletal muscles which creates the look of extra skin and flabbiness of the fat pads around the eyes which emphasize the lowering of the eyebrows. Cheeks also start to lower as the corner of the lips and skin on the chin and neck starts to relax and gravity does its work. But the speed of the skin aging can’t be blamed solely on genes even though a lot about aging is written there, because there are still outside factors that we can control and thus slow down the aging process.

Sun, the main problem

Natural aging starts in the third decade of our life and it is a relatively slow process called intrinsic aging. But on the other side, our skin since early age is affected by outside elements that are called extrinsic aging. The main damaging source of outside aging is sun, then habits like smoking, drinking and diet, also polluted environment, cold, heat, etc., can affect the skin aging. Sun emits ultraviolet light that is separated into three wavelengths, UVA, UVB and UVC. Ultraviolet C is mostly absorbed in the atmosphere, UVB also gets stuck in the atmosphere but enough passes to have an effect. It is required for creating vitamin D in the skin, but it is also damaging to the DNA and can cause sunburns. UVA is the most dangerous of the three since it causes significant damage to the DNA and can cause skin cancer. Aging of the skin affected by sun is called photoaging. Skin becomes dark yellow, rough, loses elasticity and causes pigmentation. So it is very important to protect your skin from the sun’s ultraviolet radiation.

Adequate care with addition of avoiding sun when it’s strongest is using the protective supplements. If there is already advanced degradation of the skin due to the sun there are solutions for that. Creating new collagen and elastic fibers can be accomplished by using locally the retinoic acid, dermabrasion or chemical skin peeling.

Before the morning face wash, it’s good to know that lukewarm water removes the oily ingredients on the surface of the skin and with that losing protective coating of the skin. And if you are using the soap, it’s even more efficient. Using water and soap is fine if you have oily skin, while normal and dry skin is better to clean with more oily products like cleaning milk.

Micelle miracle

On a cleaned face usually some tonic is used to stabilize the protective acidic layer of skin, narrows the wrinkles, gently disinfects and refreshes the skin. With usual cleaning products in use, today it’s very popular to use micellar solutions which are good for cleaning all types of skin. With dry skin, use of micellar solution will save optimal balance of lipids and secure hydration of the surface protective layer of the skin. A normal and oily skin micellar solution will thoroughly clean the skin, without drying it out, irritation or creating imbalance of natural pH of the skin. Micelles are colloid particles with small size and mass which makes them float in the water solution. They act like a magnet on the skin by attracting the impurities and extra oils (sebum) made by sebaceous glands. After using a micellar solution the skin doesn’t need extra washing.

Enriched nutritional creams

To secure the softness and youth look of the skin you need to know the rules of skin hydration and to secure necessary skin moisture. During the day it’s best to use hydration cream that has ingredients to protect the skin from environment elements. The main task is to stop the dehydration of the upper layers of the epidermis. At night it’s good to use creams before going to sleep that have regenerative substances like natural collagen and elastin. Those are the most important proteins to keep the skin elastic.

More popular are also the use of liposomes. They have the same lipid composition like membrane lipids of the skin which they secure easier passing through epidermal cells. In the last decade there has been a lot of research in understanding how skin ages on cellular and molecular level and that makes it possible to produce new “anti-aging” products that are more efficient.

Healthy lifestyle, trying to avoid too much stress, avoiding bad environment effects and with good skin care we can significantly reduce skin aging and not only for the esthetic look, but also to keep our biggest organ healthy to make the whole body healthier. And also, don’t overdue with the sun exposure. Even though it is necessary for our body and skin, too much exposure to bad UV rays will do more damage than benefits, so use adequate skin UV protectors.

Most people think that mutual love between two partners is one of the most important life accomplishments. But, when we really think about what is necessary for a stable relationship it’s useful to look at data from research done by American psychologists on more than 21 000 couples. The research gathered information on some essential questions regarding the communication in the relationship. Couples were first graded by the factor of happiness and they divided the group into 5000 happy couples, 5000 not happy and the rest were put into a group of average happy. The research continued on the first two groups and they both received the same questions that were later compared. The comparison of the collected information brought the research to 5 conclusions that were important in the relationship.

1 – What we do together

According to the observation that in happy relationships couples were spending more time together, on statement „we can easily figure out what to do together“ agreed 86% of happy couples and only 28% of unhappy ones. At the same time, 71% of happy couples and 17% of unhappy ones said they managed to find a balance between free time they spent together and time they didn’t. For a stable relationship it’s good for every partner to have enough time for independent activities as long it doesn’t affect the time spent together, or vice versa.

Incompatibility in interests and time spent on them is mostly bad for partners in the long term, especially in later parts of a relationship when there is less physical passion and children are grown up and there is no focus on them anymore.

ADVICE. Because a good relationship is one where partners willingly spend a lot of time together, choose partners that you want to spend time with and share similar interests and not just sexual activity.

2 – Listen to me carefully

On the question if the statement is correct „your partner is a good listener“, positively responded 83% of the happy couples and only 18% of unhappy ones. Obviously, a good listening of your partner contributes a lot to a good relationship.

With a statement „my partner does not understand how I feel“, 79% of the unhappy couples and only 13% of the happy ones agreed. So in just 13% of stable relationships, partners are not bothered that the other side can’t read their feelings which bring the conclusion that such emotional blindness is very negative in keeping the relationship stable.

With a statement „my partner understands and respects my opinions and attitudes”, agreed 87% of happy couples and 19% of unhappy ones. This also one of the long term traits, since in the beginning partners are in focus of other factors and don’t pay attention to deeper understanding of their partners. This can be a problem if later in the relationship partners have fundamental differences in opinions about ideologies, education, intelligence or politics. Even if the partners are very different regarding their temperament, if they understand each other and have a similar look at life, things will fall in line over time.

ADVICE. So in search for a good partner for a stable relationship, give more chances to those who will listen to you more and understand your opinions and ideas. Those traits are much more important in developing a stable relationship than just the fatal attraction and passion in the beginning.

3 – You are right, I’m sorry

That they are satisfied with how they talk to each other 90% of happy couples said yes and only 15% of unhappy ones. Undoubtedly it’s important to have normal and tolerant conversations with your partner, one of more important aspects of a good relationship. Same as constant fighting over every little thing slowly brings intolerance toward the other person.

Ask if they agree with the statement „during the disagreement, I can share feelings and ideas with a partner“, 85% of happy couples said yes, while among unhappy ones there was only 22%. Not many relationship does not require a partner’s adjustment to another, but some people don’t have the will to be more flexible or just want other people to adjust to them.

Statement „we are both equally willing to adapt in the relationship“ said they agree 87% of happy couples and 46% unhappy ones. From this statement it is visible that adaptation doesn’t save many couples from being unhappy, but most couples who are willing to adapt were much happier.

ADVICE. Inflexibility is not a good  thing in a relationship. Partner unwillingness to see and acknowledge their own mistakes and bad judgements brings tension and anxiety. Quality of relationship is much better if both partners are willing to have an open conversation about things that bother them. Insisting that one person is always right brings only spite in other person, while being open to admit you are wrong and offer apology leaves other person without confrontation arguments.

4 – Money is (not) important to me

How important is the ability to agree with decisions regarding money shows the reaction to the statement „it is not difficult for us to agree around financial matters“. That this is related to their relationship agrees with 80% of happy couples and 32% unhappy ones. If one partner is more prone to spend money to satisfy their material and more prone to spending money than other partner it can grow into bitterness.

ADVICE. Differences in this area of relationship can bring that one of partners will invest a lot of time in energy into trying to keep living that lifestyle or try to find a partner that can give it to them.

5 – Sexual satisfaction

In the end the research showed that sexual satisfaction is for sure important in stable development of relationships, while disagreement in that aspect can lead to disappointment and breaking up. With their sexual life 85% of happy couples are satisfied, 29% of unhappy couples are not satisfied while 15% of couples are happy despite their sexual life lost a spark.

ADVICE. Sexual satisfaction is not an important factor in the relationship only if both partners agree on that. If one of partners is unhappy with sex in relationship it will only lead to trouble in a long way.

Happy couples are…

Psychologists claim that they can determine with more than 90% certainty if some couples are happy or not if there are these things in a relationship.

  • Partners spend a lot of time together, but still have time for themself
  • They are involved together in same activities
  • They are capable of adapt to each other
  • They can have normal conversations about things that bother them and they pay attention to what other person is telling them
  • They are willing to admit a mistake and offer an apology
  • They can solve their problems in an efficient and creative ways
  • They agree on how money affects their relationship
  • And they are compatible in sex

Years of new research shows that men need to watch out for their fertility. It was always known that male infertility depends on various internal and external factors that change naturally during life, but now experts warn that a series of factors can influence fertility of a healthy man. Process of creating new sperm, called spermatogenesis lasts from 75 – 85 days under the influence of a male sex hormone testosterone made by testicles.

Therefore in every cycle new sperm can differ from the last one, by the numbers and quality. And those elements are the important ones when we talk about male fertility. Sperm is made out of spermatozoa, secretion of sex glands and secretion of epididymis. Usually there are some cells included also like cells from the urinary tract, white blood cells or in some cases various microorganisms.

It’s totally normal that sperm changes from day to day even from a healthy male. To make an analysis of the sperm quality, men need to restrain from sex for 3-5 days to get more precise results. Semen  analysis is called spermiogram and its routine test to determine the fertility and presence of microorganisms and inflammatory cells in sex glands. Results can vary since spermiogram is not a perfect test and factors like smoking, alcohol, drugs or hormonal intakes along with individual oscillations like change of temperature inside the scrotum due to things like hot baths, saunas, elevated body temperature or some inflamminations, can affect the test. But the test can still show the overall reproduction function status of a male.

The most often cause of the male infertility is a smaller number of spermatozoa called oligospermia and weak mobility of spermatozoa called asthenospermia. Last studies show that today male infertility is the cause of more than 40% of infertility cases in marriage, while some 40 years ago it was around 20%. What is the exact cause of the increased male infertility is still under the debate, but researches show there is a progressive drop of overall number of sperm inside the seminal fluid, especially the mobile and quality spermatozoa.

Chaos in the system

The drop in the number of those mobile and quality spermatozoa in overall numbers is the main issue since those are the ones that can fertilize the egg cells. Even though that is not a final conclusion about risk of fertilization, since it takes only one in a millions, the continuation of this trend will raise that risk in the future. The research shows that larger numbers of men with smaller numbers of sperm also have weaker motility of spermatozoa (oligoasthenospermia), while men with weaker motility of spermatozoa still have the normal number of sperm in seminal fluid. In the special category are men that don’t have any motility in the sperm (necrospermia).

Normal sperm numbers consist of about 50% mobile spermatozoa and half of that of progressively motile spermatozoa – more important ones since they move forward. Most common causes of weak sperm motility are various acute and chronic infections in the urinary tract, bladder, prostate or testicles. In that case after the urology exam, it’s important to do microbiological tests like urine culture, semen culture, urethral swab for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, chlamydia, mycoplasma and ureaplasma.

During the urology exam that includes the color doppler ultrasound of scrotum it’s easy to see possible problems like varicocele, a mass of varicose veins in the spermatic cord, since it can also be a reason for weak motility of sperm. Treatment for weak sperm motility depends on the cause, and the most frequent one is sexual infections that can be treated depending on antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST) by a specific antibiotic. If the cause is sexually transmitted diseases (STD) then both partners need to be treated to avoid returning of infection and making it more resistant to further treatments. Varicocele as a cause of male infertility can be treated with classic or laparoscopic operation where the veins are tied off.

Male powerful allies

There are some supplements that can help with weak sperm motility:

L-arginine – is an amino acid that our body makes and is naturally found in foods containing protein. In studies it was found to be helpful in increasing sperm count.

Vitamins C and E – they help in sperm creation.

Selenium and Zinc – they help in keeping the health of testicles and prostate in good shape.

L-carnitine – study shows that men with fertility problems while taking the supplements with L-carnitine had improved sperm motility.

When someone tells you that they have inflammation you usually think of something common that can be fixed with a cream or over the counter drugs. But there is a different type of inflammation which is a completely different serious problem – chronic inflammation. Those are types of inflammation that you can’t even feel, the modern medical tests can’t sometimes detect it but chronic inflammation is connected with the start of some serious illnesses like cancer.

There is much research on the subject of how inflammation affects the body in the first place. The basis is simple, it all starts with our immune system – first line of defense against any type of illness. When we are hurt or sick, our bone marrow sends special units for defense made from white blood cells leukocytes to stop the infection and start the healing process. Sometimes there is a problem in communication and the immune system gets the wrong information and it acts without the need and those white blood cells circulate around the body looking to fix things but they don’t find anything. If something like that starts to happen more often the immune system might start to attack healthy organs and start doing damage to them instead of fixing things. They can also start attacking other types of cells that the body activates as an immune response and doing that weaken the overall defense of the body leaving the space for all sorts of illnesses to appear.

Good news is that there are ways we can help our body to prevent chronic inflammation of appearing in the first place. These are the things that can cause bad immune system response and things that can help the immune system.

Inflammation allies

Overweight

When you start gaining excessive weight your fat cells in the body start to swell and oxygen struggles to reach those cells. Confused by this sudden stress on the cells, the body sends an immune response. White cells come to aid and cause inflammation of those cells since the fat cells start to act like they are infected. After a while that inflammation can cause other healthy cells to stop responding to insulin which controls the level of sugar in the blood, which can lead to diabetes. If this continues over a longer period of time, white blood cells can start causing problems in normal functioning of the liver.

Too much sweet and fatty food

When we eat a lot of sugar, saturated fats and trans-fatty acids we keep the door open for all sorts of problems. Research shows that food that is increasing sugar levels in the blood very fast also causes the inflammations. Tests showed that when people ate food with a high glycemic index, inflammation markers increased a lot in just a few hours after meal. Chips, French fries, sweets all raise sugar in blood fast and you should remove them as much as possible from your diet.

Life with stress and anxiety

Unexpected situations that in any way affect our nerve system can be potentially bad since it can cause a sudden increase in stress hormones and body anxiety, which has been proven that any inflammations in the body get a boost during the increased stress. Research showed that among people who have chronic problems with anxiety and depression there has been also very often some inflammation processes going in the body.

Breathing low quality air

Your immune system hates smog and low quality air. People who live in areas where air quality is low and smog often have a larger chance to get diabetes because bad air causes more immune reaction in the body which can cause inflammations and cells can become more resistant to insulin. Even worse is the inhaling tobacco smoke which is a huge stress on the lungs that causes strong reactions of the immune system to fix the problems which over time can cause the immune system to overreact and cause serious lung health issues.

Inflammation enemies

Omega-3 fatty acids

It’s already known that these fatty acids are very good for the health of the heart and nerve system. But further research showed Omega-3 fatty acids are very good in controlling the overreacting white blood cells and with that lowering the chance of inflammation caused by them. So try to include at least a few meals a week that are rich in Omega-3.

Fruits and vegetables

Groceries of plant origin are very rich with anti-inflammatory substances, antioxidants, carotenoids (yellow and orange pigment in carrots and pumpkins) or lycopene that gives red color to tomatoes. Grapes and red wine are also very good in preventing inflammation. Research showed that Mediterranean diet which is rich in vegetables, fish, fruits and olive oil is one of the best diets for a healthy life without inflammations.

Exercise

We exercise to be in good form, skinnier, in better mood but if there is one more reason for it than research shows that regular physical activity is lowering the body stress as one of the main conditions where inflammation occurs often. Daily moderate physical activity of 40-50 minutes is best to keep stress under check. And it’s also noted that weight is not the only reason to start with regular exercise, since even skinny people that are not physically active can have some inflammation hiding. With exercise you are making your fat cells smaller and with that calming down your immune system to not over react.

Keep the good mood

Any type of lowering your body stress is one of main steps in lowering the risk of chronic inflammations. Try to keep negative thoughts from your mind thinking about things that might happen and focus on the good things that are going on in your life. Various breathing techniques and meditation can help calm your mind to not go rogue into negative mode. Smile a lot and surround yourself with positive people, that can help for sure.

MYTH 1

Antihistamines that are sold over the counter without prescription are equally efficient for alleviating the clogged nasal congestion and swollen mucous membrane like the anti-inflammatory drugs that are sold with prescription.

Fact: Antihistamines that are sold over the counter without prescription can help in controlling some symptoms of allergies, but have a small effect on alleviating the clogged nasal congestion or inflammation that often occurs with allergies. If no prescription drug is not working or causes side effects it’s best to consult a physician. They can prescribe more efficient drugs that won’t treat only symptoms but also the cause of the problems.

MYTH 2

Over the counter drugs in shape of sprays or nose drops which reduce the swollen mucous membrane are causing addiction.

Fact: Over the counter drugs which reduce the swollen mucous membrane are not causing addiction. But, also it’s a fact that often use can make the drug less effective over time, so you need to use it more often to keep working. That’s why those types of drugs are usually best to use in a short time period like 3-4 days and if they don’t work you should consult a physician to prescribe an efficient drug.

MYTH 3

Some people use natural honey to fight the spring allergies.

Fact: Natural honey contains pollen from local flowers so it might seem logical that if you consume it over time, your body raises tolerance for certain types of pollen. But, pollen that in most cases causes allergies is usually made up from various different types of plants, trees, and weeds that bees don’t use at all.

MYTH 4

Pollen allergies will not lead to food allergies.

Fact: Actually, about one third of people who are allergic to some type of pollen have also allergy to some type of food. Reaction is called oral syndrome or pollen food allergy. It’s usually a mild reaction and can cause itching, tingle in the mouth, throat and lips. It’s about the same proteins that are in pollen also. So if you have allergies to pollen from a certain tree, you might have a reaction to fruits from that tree or similar fruits that come from the same family of those trees. But the reaction is mild, lasts very short and it’s rarely serious, but it shouldn’t be confused with real food allergies that can have severe reactions.

MYTH 5

Blood test is the best test for allergy diagnosis

Fact: Actually the skin tests are more sensitive than blood tests. If we are allergic to something the skin will become red and swell. Skin test is very safe even for infants and small children when performed by doctor allergologist.

Interesting things about pollen

  • pollen travels up to a distance of 500 miles
  • in spring, first pollen comes from trees, than grass and weeds
  • one plant can release millions of pollen particles
  • 20 particles of ragweed pollen in 1 cubic meter (1.3 yards) is enough to cause allergic reaction

For centuries the sailors were getting ill on their voyages. Mysterious sickness would exhaust them, they would get spots on their skin which was becoming pale and after a while it would take their life. That was the case until the middle of the 17th century, when they started to get lemon or lime juice with their food and the illness known as scurvy was beaten. What those sailors lacked was vitamin C, and citrus fruit has vitamin C in abundance.

A ship physician Richard Woodal was the first person who successfully cured scurvy with lemons. Scientists claim that citrus are best health keepers during the winter days when the body immune system is under pressure from common cold viruses and flu.

Humans started to cultivate citrus fruits about 4000 years ago due to its sour-sweet pulp that’s very refreshing. All citrus originate from Asia and with time it moved to the Middle East and Mediterranean. There are three original citrus genes that have been the source of all today citrus fruits, those three are mandarin orange (Citrus reticulata), citron (Citrus medica) and pomelo (Citrus maxima). Their crossing created many popular citrus like oranges, grapefruit, lemon or kumquat. Most of the citrus we eat today are older hybrids, while red oranges and clementines are dated to more modern times.

Nutrients in the citrus fruits are mostly the same with slight variations in some species. But they all have one thing in common, intense smell due to flavonoids and lemonoids which are actually terpenes and present to protect the fruits from unwanted consumers. They are made of a large amount of citric acid and vitamin C. In 100g (3.6oz) of orange or lemon there is almost 50g of Vitamin C, while grapefruit has about 40g.

Citrus tasty pulp is usually made up of 5 to 12 parts going from light yellow to red color. It’s covered by a white spongy envelope made up from pectin fibers which many people together with crust just peel off, which is a mistake since that white spongy part is full of flavonoids and phyto substances that are good for the body. But in today’s commercial production and use of chemicals, citrus crust absorbs many of the chemicals and thus making it healthier to just peel it off.

Prevention potential

Even though vitamin C will not stop us from getting the cold or flu, it can shorten the duration of it and keep your immune system in good shape against the viruses during the stress times. One of the best abilities of vitamin C is that it can help the body to absorb iron many times more efficiently. Vegetarians and vegans are especially sensitive to anemia and women during their menstruation periods. But during the pregnancy citrus fruit can be very helpful also due to its richness with folic acid which is very important in the fetus development.

There are high concentrations of potassium in grapefruit and orange which is good for maintaining the normal blood pressure, same as hesperidin, flavonoid from the orange and lemon pulp and crust. Citrus fruits also contain rutin and quercetin flavonoids and strong antioxidants together with vitamin C are very important for the health of blood vessels.

Nutrients in citrus fruits are also vital for everyday body functions. Folic acid has an important role in DNA replication, which is a prerequisite for cell repair of every organ and in synergy with other phyto chemicals it helps in body recuperation. One more important ingredient of citrus fruits is fibers. Even though the body can’t absorb them, they are essential in regulating the digestive tract and keeping it working well.
